KVIBE LAUNCHES SUMMER OF CYCLING THROUGH ALOHA SATURDAY EVENT

On June 16, 2012, Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange (KVIBE) will host “Aloha Saturday.” The event will take place at KVIBE’s warehouse located at 1638 Kamehameha IV Road from 10AM to 5PM.

Aloha Saturday will kick off a summer full of bicycle gatherings at KVIBE. Working in partnership with Aloha Fixed and the Kickstand, Aloha Saturday will feature GoldSprint races, HNL Bike Polo exhibitions, and a “best in show” bike contest. GoldSprints allow two participants to race each other via bicycles mounted on rollers, as a computer tracks their progress and projects the data on a screen. HNL Bike Polo is a local organization of cycling enthusiasts who meet weekly to practice the exciting sport of bicycle polo. All major local bicycle shops will be graciously sponsoring the event with prize incentives.

KVIBE is catalyst of preventive public health, offering healthy bicycling activities for youth and the community. It is a program of Kōkua Kalihi Valley (KKV), a non-profit Community Health Center that is dedicated to promoting healthy endeavors for the community’s youth. “With obesity and chronic diseases like diabetes on the rise across the state, we hope to introduce more and more people to the fun, health-promoting world of cycling,” said KKV’s Executive Director, Dr. David Derauf. “By instilling in Kalihi’s children a love of bikes, KVIBE promotes healthy habits for life.”

Community members and cycling enthusiasts of all ages are invited to join KVIBE for Aloha Saturday on June 16, 2012. ***Aloha Saturday event page for further information.***

The Perks of Aloha Saturday.

“A bicycle, if understood correctly and used to its full potential, is actually a key to a completely different, and in many ways more rewarding, way of life. Sure, there are limits to the ways in which you can use a bicycle, but those limits are surprisingly few. A bicycle can give you the feeling of freedom and speed you get from riding a motorcycle, the sense of well-being and peace you get from meditating, the health benefits you get from an afternoon in the gym, the sense of self-expression you get from learning to play guitar, and the feeling of victory you get from completing a marathon. It’s an invention that was in many ways ahead of its time.” - Eben Weiss, Bike Snob.

As summer quickly approaches in Honolulu, the opportunities to ride bicycles has exponentially increased. To celebrate this momentous occasion, KVIBE has teamed up with Aloha Fixed and the Kickstand to host ALOHA SATURDAY. The event will feature bicycle races, goldsprints, bike polo, and other bicycle activities. A summer of healthy endeavors and rewards is abound, let us ride bicycles together.

Where The Light Gets In.

The Tantalus Time Trial coerces impressionable cyclists to ascend 1,400 feet of elevation. It also suggests that participants should pursue such matters as swiftly as possible. It was Ronald Ganot’s first bicycle race, and he placed second amongst juniors (photo by Colin Cross). One month later, Ronald and three other KVIBE youth would attempt the Hawaii State Team Time Trial Championship.

As Hawaii’s road bicycle racing season is now in full swing, KVIBE - with the help of cambiamento d andaturo - will be sponsoring underprivileged youth to pursue their cycling passions. On May 6th, four bleary-eyed youth collected themselves into KVIBE volunteer Larry Victorino’s truck and made their way to Kualoa Regional Park. They arrived at the park before dawn and the aura of anticipation was palpable.

Hours later, Kolii Remigio (age 13), Ganot (age 18), Marc Cris Balai and Richard Yamane (ages 17) were crowned the 2012 Hawaii State Team Time Trial - Juniors Champions. KVIBE is evolving, and it is the program’s belief that these bicycle experiences and friendships will give Kalihi’s youth a courageous chance to further themselves.

KVIBE is currently gearing up for summer and is kindly requesting public support. Recently the program lost diligent volunteer Eilif Knutson - who returned home to Oregon. If you are an adult of strong character, are passionate about bicycles, and want to better the lives of the youth of Kalihi Valley, KVIBE would love to have you as a volunteer. Donations of bicycles - in particular road bicycles - would be greatly appreciated and be given to youth who want to race them as worthy pursuits.

Meanwhile, the KVIBE facebook page is extremely active - there are a multitude of photos from the hawaii state team time trial and tantalus time trial as well as other events KVIBE has been active in the last month. KVIBE will be participating in the fourth installment of Green Machines at Farrington High on May 15th, so please drop by if it may find you well. Ride a Bicycle.
